Seems a building which Banksy did some artwork on in Melbourne, Australia 5 yrs ago has been Heritage Listed meaning his artwork is Heritage Listed as well. No pic unfortunately.
A 1920s building in central Melbourne on which renowned UK graffiti artist Banksy left his mark about five years ago has made its way onto the state's heritage register.
Melbourne's Nicholas Building on the corner of Swanston St and Flinders Lne has been given the highest level of heritage protection under Victorian law, which means it is now protected under the Victorian Heritage Act.
One exterior wall of the building, which houses an eclectic array of shops, designers and artists, has a one-metre tall stencil artwork of a deep-sea diver in a duffle coat by the artist.
But the building's key architectural features, rather than the street art, contributed to its heritage protection.
Heritage Council chair Chris Gallagher said the building was an important example of Melbourne inter-war architect Harry Norris' work.
“Of particular significance are the innovative Wunderlich terracotta tiles created for the building facades to ensure longevity and ease of maintenance,” she said.
Another key feature was the L-shaped ground floor Cathedral Arcade linking Swanston St with Flinders Lne, thought to be Melbourne's only remaining example of a lead-light, barrel-vaulted ceiling.
