Haven't heard the album properly yet but clocked em on Later at the weekend. Fuck me it was awful - and how come they get three songs when the sublime Toumani Diabate get's 1? As one of my mates said - Miserable cow.

New album is pretty decent. Didn't think it was awful... maybe a little wobbly compared to the studio versions, maybe Barrow could've quantized his drums a bit more on Machine Gun. Liked the webcast apart from the slightly messed up guitar on Threads.
As for miserable, thats what they do, them doing happy music would be pretty ridiculous.
The Mali guy was cool... Mali artists have become a bit of a trendyfied bandwagon now though, the Bjork enlisting case in point.

Not a big fan of the album myself...there's nothing there which really caught my attention, except maybe Machine Gun. Must give it another listen i suppose.
Might chuck on the webcast rip later and have a look...
Actually, just having a quick listen to Third, and The Rip has got my attention, although i think the looping beat thingy is a touch high pitched.

Quite surprising for the Avstermeister to come out against the modern-day really... the new noisier, droning, industrialish, more instrumentalised tones of what they're now doing are something one would've assumed would appeal... guess it shows how wrong assumptions can be...

Controversial init! The miserable thing was just a flippant comment really. I had high hopes for this new direction of theirs but it just doesn't cut it imo, and her voice just grates in this new environment. Perhaps I wasn't being so flippant then.....never really liked them that much in the first place.
I first discovered the sound of the Kora at Womad over ten years ago and have become a great fan of Toumani and his mates ever since. Catching him in Bristol next month - if he's coming to a venue near you then ignore the fashion tags and get down there - it's become popular for many reasons, one of them being it's gorgeous.
